What is the ego?

The ego is difficult to explain because the ego isn’t one specific thing.  It is actually made up of many different beliefs that a person acquires over their life.

It’s an idea or opinion you have of yourself, especially your feeling of your own importance and ability.

Ryan Holiday defines it like this in his book:
“An unhealthy belief in our own importance. Arrogance. Self-centered ambition.” — Ryan Holiday

To read more on the Ego, here is a good explanation in the Cambridge Dictionary.

What you can learn from this book

As this site is about sports trading I will go in to detail on how this book can help you become a better trader.

Everybody has an ego, it’s all about keeping it under control.

Ego is the enemy because when you think you know everything, you can’t learn. If you can’t learn, you can’t improve and you stay where you are.

So to become a successful trader you have to keep learning, if you think you already know it all then you are doomed for failure.

3 main lessons

1# Live with purpose not passion
Having a purpose will help you accomplish life changing work.
Most people aren’t living on purpose. They wander around life distracted, looking for the next form of gratification, wondering why they aren’t happy and why they don’t get what they want. They drive to a job they hate to pay for a car that brings them to that job, which also pays for a house they abandon during the day to go to that job. The ego loves the comfort a “secure” job has, but purpose, as well as the best things, happen outside of your comfort zone.

“…this moment is not your life. But it is a moment in your life. How will you use it?”

2# Always be a student

The ego tries to build an identification with success, withholding you from learning more, but learning is a requirement, especially in the beginning. The book explains that when you are just starting out you need to remember: You aren’t as good as you think you are, you probably need your attitude re-adjusted, and the things you learned in books or school are out of date or wrong.
According to the book, If you’re not still learning, you’re already dying.”

3# Talk and think less; do more

Talking is easy, everyone does it, but silence is rare in today’s world. Your ego tells you that you need recognition from others, but real confidence doesn’t need to talk, it produces work. Talking destroys action. Sit quietly and work. Let go of the distractions of social media and of the news, and focus on your work. Watch how much better you get. This is especially important when you are trading.

At times we definitely need to be thinking, such as when envisioning goals, but if you spend too much time thinking and talking about what you are going to do, you are less likely to actually do it.
Stay focused on execution.

In short, the book says we must manage our ego or see it get the better of us.

Ego is the enemy book review – final thoughts

This is one of the best books on controlling your ego.. Everyone has an ego, and those who do not believe this, are blinded by themselves.

Too often we hide away from feedback, because we can’t admit we are wrong. We protect ourselves, but really behind these actions is an ego.

The book is broken down into three parts which makes it easier to absorb.

Part 1# – Aspire
This is where we’re just starting out and desiring to find success. We need to make sure we don’t let ego keep us from moving forward.

Part 2# – Success
This is when we’ve found some level of success and need to be mindful not to allow ego the opportunity to bring us down.

Part 3# – Failure
This is when we stumble and need to make certain ego doesn’t prevent us from getting back up on the saddle.

You can see from the three sections above how important these three steps are if we want to become successful at sports trading.

It’s a book you want in your trading library so every so often you can go back and re-read.
