In a nutshell…..

Mindsets can be one of two main types: fixed mindsets and growth mindsets.

People with the fixed mindset believe their personalities, social skills, capabilities, intelligence among other traits are born with them and thus cannot be changed or improved. As a result, they usually tend to give up quickly and almost instantly in the face of life’s obstacles and difficulties.

People with the growth mindset, however, believe in growth and learning. They believe that any and all areas of their lives can be improved upon with hard work and learning. As a result, they tend to persevere in the face of all different kinds of challenges and problems.

How will this help with sports trading?

A while ago now I wrote a blog post on Having the right mindset for sports trading here it explains everything about the two types of mindsets, and which one is required for trading.

This books promotes learning from failures. It has helped tremendously with my trading, as failures or losses is a big part of this game, and something we need to get used to.

How to know if this book can help you:

  • You feel like you’re always negative and you want to be more positive.
  • When you always seem to be losing instead of winning.
  • If you want to excel as a leader, entrepreneur, parent, etc.

Key points I took from this book

#1 Change can be tough, but you never hear anyone say it wasn’t worth it. Changing from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset won’t be easy, but it will enhance your life.

#2 You can choose to view all things in life as something you are naturally capable of or something that you can work to accomplish. When you view life as a series of tasks you can work to accomplish instead of a list of things you either are or are not capable of, great things can happen.

#3 We shy away from hard challenges, because if we fail, then we are the failure. But you can change your mindset, into a growth mindset, and tackle challenges without taking failure personally, and instead, use it to grow.

#4 Your attitude in approaching problems in life will influence your ability to solve that problem.

Mindset book review – Final thoughts

Being successful is a by-product from having a growth mindset. People with a growth mindset believe that things can improve. They believe that they can overcome a problem or work themselves out of a difficult spot. The fixed mindset is one where you do not believe things will get better. In the fixed mindset, there is no hope, and as a result, it is hard to be successful.

In this book Carol Dweck writes about interesting case studies and demonstrates her points through business, sports, and education. Through compelling story telling, she shows that is possible to have a growth or fixed mindset depending the situation–she also gives some pointers on how to move from a fixed mindset to a growth one.

Main Points: Recognizing and adjusting your mindset is the first step to success. Everyone has multiple mindsets (how you approach work, your family, spouse, children, exercise, weight loss, etc.). Your current mindset in any situation can be altered (from fixed to growth and growth to fixed).

The downside to this book is that it does become repetitive. I feel this book could of been half the size and the message still would of got through.
